Makeup is all about enhancing the beauty that is already there. For many people now starting off with makeup and who are not sure about what products they can get without costing a fortune, here’s the 101.
I like makeup and I love using it to really even out my face. I am not a fan of wearing a ton of makeup at all- I resolutely believe that simple is better. Think I’m lying? Have you ever seen the VS Angels? They are well known for their natural, glowing skin and as such, they are my main inspiration. Still don’t believe me? I mean honestly, have you ever seen a VS model who looked anything except bronzed, glowing and fresh-faced?
With that little pep talk for any makeup newbies, let’s dive right in! Here is the cute little diagram I made with all the essentials.
Honestly, I designed the process of application in a clockwise order, starting with the moisturizer (heck, I was putting on my makeup mentally when I was making this).
Let’s get straight into my suggested products now shall we!
Moisturizer– I love Garnier moisturizers and there are quite a wide range that are suitable for all skin types.
Face Primer– Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer. A primer is essential for creating a barrier between your skin and your makeup. It essentially does what its names says- it provides a base (primes) your face before makeup application. I love this primer because it has such an airy texture when you apply it to your skin- it literally feels as if there is nothing on your skin. For those who don’t really want to apply foundation, when you apply your primer, you would notice an immediate difference in the way that your skin looks and feels.
Foundation– Revlon ColorStay Whipped 24hr Foundation which is amazing. I swear by this product because it literally melts into my face and gives a beautiful evened out complexion. I recommend whipped foundations for those now starting off with makeup since they are much easier to manipulate as opposed to liquid ones. Also, I do not suggest you even picking a powder foundation because there is the huge problem of ending up with a very uneven finish.
Concealer– Garnier Roll On Anti-Dark Circle. I adore this concealer for under-eye areas. I love the roll on feeling because it always comes out in the right amount. Best of all, it does not cake and it is not heavy at all. There is an immediate difference that you feel when you apply this. It also contains caffeine and this results in a tingly sensation which really wakes up your entire face. I have tried many other types of concealers but I never really liked the consistency when I applied it to my face. This is a must-have product for those nights when you just haven’t slept well.
Powder– Revlon ColorStay Pressed Powder. This is a simple little compact of pressed powder that really adds to your finished look. Powder is necessary for setting that foundation and preventing any oiliness which may threaten to make your makeup slip right off your face.
Eye Primer– Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer & Brightener. This is an excellent primer for your eyes and its main purpose to make sure your eye-shadows pop and don’t crease throughout the day. By the name, you can tell that it is also an eye brightener aka, it can be used to cover-up dark under eye circles. Honestly, I don’t fancy it being used as such because it doesn’t really blend right in as I would like it too. You can try it out and see what you think though!
Basic Eyeshadow Palette– Well, here is where the choice is totally up to you. You can get any colours that you like! If you’re not sure of what to get though, I recommend choosing quads like Maybelline’s Eye Studio Quads as they are made such that they can fulfil an entire eye look. If you’re now starting out, I would definitely recommend Pink Persuasion (smoky eyes), Copper Chic (everyday look) and Sapphire Siren (pop of colour) as they have the widest range of colours that can be used to create several looks.
However, if I am to be 100% honest with you, I prefer the NAKED BASICS palette by Urban Decay as a beginner starter eyeshadow as you can create very easy day to night looks with those key shadows. I am in love with this palette and I think that it is so versatile. If you can’t afford it right now, definitely start off with quads like these- but save up for that NAKED BASICS, because it is worth every cent!
Black eyeliner (black being the universal colour choice for eyeliner)- now this is again, a personal preference. I made another little diagram with all the eyeliners I love, including my favourite one!
Mascara– Maybelline The Rocket. I love this as a beginner mascara as it really makes your lashes voluminous- and I mean voluminous! It also adds a lot of length and overall, I think it is an ideal mascara have for a makeup newbie. Again, an honesty moment, I own a ridiculous amount of mascaras- but for the sake of this blog post, I will refrain from going into the details of each one. However, have no fear, I have all the plans in the world to make another post solely dedicated to mascaras and anyone say a mascara routine?
Blush and Bronzer– Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush & Revlon ColorStay and Rimmel London Natural Bronzer. Let me start with the cream blushes. OMG. I swoon at the thought. These are absolutely the most phenomenal blushes I have used (for the time being). They are so creamy and the sensation cannot be described- only felt. They are perfect for giving a gorgeous and natural flush to your face.
I like the Rimmel London Natural Bronzer because not only is it waterproof, but it has a slight shimmer meaning that it can be used in both the day and the night. It is not as heavy as the Revlong ColorStay Finishing Powder (which is one of my go-to bronzers) and it is not as shimmery as my Milani Baked Bronzers (which I crave when I want a hint of sparkle).
Honesty time again? Okay while I love these products, when considering the fate of makeup newbies, I think that having everything in palettes just make more sense because it would be less confusing and it’s a literal grab and oh look, I have everything I need right here. I have to say that am in love with the NAKED FLUSHED palette also by Urban Decay. It is ridiculously swoon-worthy and perfect for anyone new to makeup. Can I mention how much I LOVE this? It comes with a blush, bronzer and highlighter! I’m just gaga for words. Since it is a bit on the pricer side, I recommend saving up for this so you can get it. I guarantee you- it’s amazing!
Lip Products– I love so many lip products from Revlon and Maybelline, it’s just too ridiculous to keep track of. I love the Revlon Just Bitten Kissables as a very long lasting lip stain- it also has peppermint which gives you this amazing tingle when you apply it. I am addicted to the Maybelline Color Whispers and Vivids as well as the Revlon Lip Butters. This area is a again up to you so feel free to try out as many as you would like until you find what’s perfect for you.
